A collection of more than 70 classic photographs, pulled from the voluminous archives of The New York Times, will be exhibited through Dec. 29 at the Self Family Arts Center on Hilton Head Island.
"Live With History," is part of the newspaper's 150th anniversary celebration and features black-and-white prints of everything from Americana, transportation and sports to New York City, personalities and science - with many images dating back more than a century. The show, making its debut in the Art Center's Walter Greer Gallery, will later tour throughout the country.
The diverse range of subjects is as impressive as the photographs themselves - Babe Ruth bagging an alligator, Orville Wright flying a glider, Howard Carter opening King Tut's tomb and Sir Edmund Hillary conquering Mount Everest.
