Supply list

Participants should bring soft vine charcoal, compressed very black Charkole, two large kneaded erasers, 18" x 24" Canson Sketch Pad, a drawing pen such as a Sanford Liquid Expresso or the two-ended Sharpie, and a 18"x24" drawing board. These materials will be used for the entire weekend.

Neil Di Teresa, a noted artist and award-winning teacher, comes to Savannah this month from Berea, Ky., to conduct a special Savannah Art Association Inc. session for "Drawing Inspiration From The Masters," a free drawing workshop.

The 2 1/2 day workshop, June 22-24, is sponsored by the City of Savannah's Department of Cultural Affairs/Leisure Services Bureau, the Arts Ashore Legacy Fund and Bull Street Station Inc.

Di Teresa's works in watercolors, acrylics, oils, wood cuts, drawings, cast paper and puppets are enthusiastically collected by individuals, museums and corporations alike.

He is currently finishing a book on "A Summer Puppetry Caravan for Appalachia," a 25-year cultural outreach program that he originated at Berea College. His work has been collected by museums in three states, by 13 corporations, the University of New Mexico, New York's Pratt Institute and the University of Kentucky.

In 1999, Di Teresa received a Dupont Foundation Grant for a project that explored integration of computer assisted design with original art and text. The workshop, to be held at SPACE, 9 W. Henry St., is free and open to the public - from high school students through senior citizens. However, a $20 donation to offset the cost of models will be accepted.

On Friday evening from 7-9 p.m., workshop students will explore the building of images based on memory and imagination using a subtractive rather than additive process of drawing.

Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., students will study the human figure. Di Teresa will give specific directions on determining accurate measurements, measuring and how to "sight" in order to build accurate relationships when drawing the figure. Students will be drawing both the male & female nude model during the weekend.

Sunday, students will work to find meaning in their drawings beyond representation by drawing the figure expressively.

On both days, students should bring a brown bag lunch, drinks and snacks. Ice will be available. Refreshments will be served Friday evening.

Participants should bring soft vine charcoal, compressed very black Charkole, two large kneaded erasers, 18" x 24" Canson Sketch Pad, a drawing pen such as a Sanford Liquid Expresso, or the two-ended Sharpie and an 18"x24" drawing board. These materials will be used for the entire weekend.

To reserve a seat, call Sandy Branam, (912) 308-8286. Space is limited to 22 seats.
