SCAD professor a winner

Chin-Cheng Hung, Savannah College of Art and Design foundations professor, was a finalist in the portrait and figure category of the Second Annual Pastel 100 Awards. Hung's portrait "Chinese Beauty," a pastel on canvas coated with gesso, will be showcased in the March/April issue of The Pastel Journal, which also sponsored the competition.

"Be Content," a group show by Marcus Kenney, Jay Schemtz and Zechariah Vincent through May 12. Kenney, local artist and curator, has exhibited extensively in local and national venues. His signature style of collage is gaining him a reputation as an artist who is pushing the boundaries of painting. He will exhibit a collection of small-scale collages and 3-dimensional objects that refer to the show's title of contentment.

Schemtz has a Master's of Fine Art in painting and is exhibited around the country including Las Vegas, Cincinnati and New Orleans. He works in an impressionist style reminiscent of Van Gogh and will show a series of floral arrangements painted with oil.

Vincent, who exhibits nationally, has been based in Savannah for the past four months. "Paintings for Hospitals," takes his signature objects and translates them into two dimensions. They are intended to be viewed as either commentary or decoration for a world whose landscape is occupied with countless objects of high production and disposability. Using a variety of medium the work emphasizes the sacred object through process. 12 W. Harris St., (912) 234-9424.

COASTAL DISCOVERY MUSEUM

STARLAND

"Hashia Series: Generation Three," oil paintings by Meredith Pardue through May 31. Pardue, of Austin, Texas, will be exhibiting 15 large-scale abstract paintings in Gallery 28. She has lived and exhibited in New York City, and Portland, Ore., as well as Louisiana and Texas. She spent three years in Savannah and exhibited at the now defunct Lumiere and Athena galleries. This will be her twelfth solo exhibit. Pardue has been accepted into the prestigious Parsons School of Art in Manhattan. TYBEE FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS

May 5 and 6 at Tybee Pavilion on Tybee Island. This is the Fifth Annual Juried Art Show and Festival. Fine art and craft from the region will be on display and include original art (acrylic, oils and watercolor paintings), sculpture, pottery, stained glass, jewelry, and more. GALLERY SPACE

New works by Meryl Truett titled "Lost Found, Images Objects" will be exhibited at the City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs Gallery SPACE through May 28. An artist's reception will be held May 4 from 6-8 p.m. Truett is a fine art editorial photographer whose work is exhibited and collected nationally. She holds a master's degree in media arts with additional art training in France. Her images have been published in Peterson's Photographic, Darkroom Magazine, Camera Austria and Nashville Scene, among others. Her clients include Polygram Records, Sony Music and the Ingram Group. Her works are represented in private collections of Roseanne Cash, Chet Atkins, Tony Brown, Vanderbilt University and BellSouth Corp. LIVE OAK EMPORIUM

Watercolor original and prints by Yemassee artist Mike Rice Polk will be exhibited in "Painting the Lowcountry" through June 9. A well-known instructor and artist who has even done large mural work, Polk offers a rare look at Southern plantation living and scenes we all have become familiar with. The Emporium features fine art and handcrafted items made in the South, hand-woven fabrics, quilts, pottery, gourd art, stained glass, painted windows, jewelry and much, much more. OEHMICH THESIS EXHIBITION

"Sangita" is the title of Elaine J. Oehmich's MFA thesis exhibition on display through May 7 at Savannah College of Art and Design's Alexander Hall Gallery, 668 Indian St. Her most recent work features the seascape as an embodiment of consciousness. THE VILLAGE CRAFTSMAN

EAST END GALLERY

Ellen Huey puts the spotlight on Lowcountry scenes and views of life in rural America in her work featured this month at East End Gallery.

Ellen Huey is showing a variety of series at this River Street gallery in May. Her American Country series, which features rural scenes and images of New England continues but Huey says she is doing more Lowcountry scenes as well, including small paintings of children at the beach. Several of her popular floral paintings are available and she is planning a New England trip this summer - so watch for new works inspired by that journey. "In your light, we see light..." Hand-colored, hand pulled etching, 8"x12," signed and numbered edition of 200 by Christina Bates at Gallery 209.

Printmaker/painter Christina Bates is well known in the Lowcountry for her gentle views of life on Daufuskie Island, where she lived for several years. Her hand-colored, hand-pulled etchings depict people in their daily rituals of living. Of equal note are her animal portraits and landscapes in oils, which focus on horses and dogs, and the hunt-scene in North Carolina. Also showcased for May is the pottery of Bryan Attaway, an artist from Sylvania, Ga. Attaway creates whimsical, sometimes macabre faces, figures, and animals that adorn functional earthenware pieces. 209 E. River, 10:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and noon-5:30 p.m. Sunday. LANDINGS ART ASSOCIATION

May 11 is the annual exhibit and competition for both professionals and non-professionals. Last year, this multi-media exhibit featured 134 original works of art ranging from painting and sculpture to woodworking and ceramics. A reception will be held from 4-6 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church Hall on Skidaway Island. The May 15 meeting of the association will be held beginning at 7:30 p.m. and feature a program by Bernie Makowitz of Hilton Head. There is a $3 fee for non-members.

"Carousel Animals," is Sharon Saseen's newest print, available at Signature Gallery.

You can feel the wind in your hair and hear the carnival music when you gaze into the newest limited edition print by Sharon Saseen "Carousel Animals." Bold, bright colors and a dash of whimsy characterize Saseen's interpretation of this historic carousel.
