Sotheby's selling rare Button Gwinnett signature on June 5

Sotheby's New York will offer for sale the most prized autograph of all of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, the signature of Button Gwinnett of Georgia.

Discovered on the back of another document fragment and tentatively dated to April 7, 1763, this is only one of three to come up for auction int he last 40 years.

It is estimated to bring $75,000-$125,000.

The signature is featured among a complete set of signers of the Declaration of Independence included in the sale of the library of Marshall B. Coyne, the late proprietor of the Madison Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Gwinnett, one of 56 statesmen who signed the Declaration of Independence, returned to Savannah immediately following the signing, was appointed speaker of the Assembly and participated in drafting Georgia's Constitution. In the spring of 1777, he was appointed temporary governor and found himself in dispute with Lachlan McIntosh. A duel between the men left Gwinnett dead, ensuring the rarity of his autograph.
