SIGNATURE GALLERY
 "Key West Dreaming," pastel on board, by Larry Levow at Signature Gallery
Larry Levow will be introducing several new scenes of Key West this month. Levow, who is known for his vivid pastel and oil paintings of Lowcountry landscapes and romantic still lifes, has created the new images inspired by his most recent trip to the Keys, an area where he spend a fair amount of time basking in it semi-tropical climate. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. One of the gallery's nine artists is always on duty to meet visitors and answer questions about the art.
LANDINGS ART ASSOCIATION
The artists' group will hold its next meeting Sept.. 18 when Hilton Head Island gallery owner Jack A. Morris Jr. will be the speaker. He will discuss buying and collecting art. 7:30 p.m., Skidaway Presbyterian Church, non-members are welcome, $3 fee.
CALL FOR ARTISTS
All Georgia photographers age 18 and over are invited to enter the 2001 "Coastweeks" Photography Contest and Exhibition cosponsored by the University of Georgia Marine Education Center and Aquarium and the Sierra Club Coastal Group. Entries may be dropped off Sept.. 29 at the Aquarium on Skidaway Island. Opening reception and award presentation will be Oct. 6, 3-5 p.m. at the Aquarium. Entries will exhibit through Nov. 3. MORRIS MUSEUM OF ART

A lecture and exhibit of images from Savannah photographer Jack Leigh's latest book, "The Land I'm Bound To," will open Sept.. 6 at the museum. The lecture begins at 6:30 and will be followed by a reception at which Leigh will be available to sign copies of his book. "The Land I'm Bound To" features 200 duotone photographs that depict a variety of Lowcountry scenes and people. TALIALOU GALLERY
Elsie Taliaferro Hill and Emmy Louise Dudley have collaborated to open a new gallery at 804 Abercorn St. In addition to showing work by its founders, the gallery will also showcase work by other artist on a monthly basis. Hill's work is familiar to local art collectors but Dudley, a Virginia native, has never shown in Savannah. However, she is represented by Lansdell Gallery in Atlanta and Nordys Gallery in Birmingham. She has exhibited in more than 30 museums and galleries throughout the U.S. While both artist draw their inspiration from similar sources, they approach painting in completely different ways. Tybee Art Association
Fall Show, Sept.. 14, 7-9 p.m. The Lighthouse Gallery will host an open house and reception for the opening the Fall Show. On exhibit will be the works of member artists of the Tybee Art Association including original oil paintings, acrylic paintings, watercolors, pastels, pottery, sculpture, photography, jewelry, stained glass, fine craft and folk art.
Tybee Art Association Meeting and Program, Oct. 8. A short business meeting will be conducted at 7 p.m. to be followed at 7:30 with Ann Jackson, who will present her "Paintings from France." Jackson is a Tybee artist who is well known for her oil and acrylic paintings.

Michael DAYAN ONE-MAN SHOW

Michael Dayan will exhibit a series "Les Femmes" Sept..1-30 at Express Cafe and Bakery. Painting in a Cubist-like style, Dayan adds his own "voice," creating dimensional planes and relying on textures to lend depth to many of his paintings. Dayan also has a studio in City Market and, in early October, will hold a one-man show at Belmont College in Nashville, Tenn. Twenty black and white images made by Tobia Makover comprise "After the Silence...Poland Revisited." Photographed during her most recent trip, Makover dodges the usual "travel" photos but instead attempted to capture images of her Jewish family's homeland. Makover grew up in a tight-knit family in Atlanta and has lived in Washington, D.C., New York and Israel. THE DOLPHIN AND THE MERMAID
Overlooking the scenic Intercoastal Waterway in Thunderbolt, this gallery has a contemporary coastal theme, featuring the works of local artists Robert Isley, Rebecca Kahrs Willis, Kim Miller and Jo Gabeler. Also featured are fine craft pieces and glass works by Isabella Davis and Greg McDonald. The Village Craftsmen
This cooperative of original arts and crafts from Lowcountry artisans of Savannah and surrounding areas is featuring Hanna Collins this month. A textile artist, Collins creates clothing, purses, pillows and soft sculpture from Victorian treasures to teddy bears. The Savannah resident has been creating with fabric for over 30 years. 223 W. RAF Gallery Fine Arts
"I Am Seduced By Glass," and exhibition and sale of contemporary works by artist Thomas Philabaum continues through Sept.. 23. After several years of teaching in the Chicago area, Philabaum moved to Tucson, built his own glass-blowing studio, and earned an MFA in ceramics from the University of Arizona. 5 W. WOMENS WORK GALLERY

Sept.. 1-15 celebrate summer with a variety of Savannah artists: sculptors Tina Logan and Ila Scholla; painters Elsa Huichun Chiu, Ramonna Mackinnon, Laura Olear and Carol Cook; and mosaic artist Laura Di Nello. Also featured are paintings and etchings of J. Holland Berkley, paintings on silk by Chinese artist Yousha Kiu and a sampling of work by Miami artist Carolyn Schlam.
Opening Sept.. 17 and continuing through Oct. 31 is "Between Opposites," 16 works by artist, lecturer juror and Clemson University instructor Cecile L.K. Martin. These large works in graphite address conflict and resolution, attraction and repulsion, good and evil, man and woman. Working in series using the human condition as a source of imagery, Martin's work presents continuum for nonrepresentational to abstract to realistic interpretation. Also featured in October is Carolyn Schlam, whose interpretive drawings and paintings reflect the influences of Modigliani, Picasso and Milton Avery. (912) 447-8553. 108 E. The work of artists Sue Helmken and Gwen Flinn is showcased during this month at Gallery 209. Flinn's depictions of wildlife are executed in acrylics, and a full of whimsy. She sometimes works on handmade paper that incorporates leaves and other dried plant elements into a textured surface that imparts an organic feel to her work. Fiber artist Sue Helmken creates a variety of wearable garments and practical accessories by weaving silk, cotton and rayon on one of three looms. Taking this almost forgotten discipline a step further, Helmken often dyes the yarn herself to achieve the color schemes she needs. The results are exquisite shawls, handbags and other accessories. Helmken will be demonstrating her craft at the Gallery 209 the last two weeks of the month, beginning Sept., 15. For specific hours, call the gallery (912) 236-4583. 209 E. TELFAIR ART FAIR
The seventh annual Telfair Art Fair will be held Nov. 2-4 around historic Telfair Square in Savannah. Presented by the Telfair Museum of Art, the juried event showcases original artworks by sculptors, painters, photographers, potters, jewelers, and furniture makers from throughout the Southeast and as far away as New York and Ohio. The Art Fair begins with a preview party for museum members on Friday night, Nov. 2 and is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 3 and 4. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and noon-4:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
Joseph B. Schenk, director of the Mobile Museum of Art, Mobile, Ala., is this year's judge. Prize money totaling $4,500 will be awarded. For more information, call the Telfair Museum of Art at (912) 232-1177, Ext. 15.

Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum
